Althea Gibson was an American tennis player and professional golfer who broke racial barriers in both sports. She was the first African American to win a Grand Slam title, achieving this feat at the French Open in 1956. Gibson went on to win five Grand Slam singles titles, including two Wimbledon and two US Open championships. Her success on the tennis court paved the way for future generations of African American athletes. Gibson later became a professional golfer and continued to break barriers in the sport.
