Overview

Margaret Abbott was an American golfer who made history by becoming the first American woman to win an Olympic event. She won the women’s golf tournament at the 1900 Paris Olympics, which was the first and only time golf was played in the Olympics until it was reinstated in 2016. Interestingly, Abbott did not realize she was competing in the Olympics, as the event was part of the Exposition Universelle. Her victory remains a unique part of Olympic history.
